Celebrating the women who shape the Usher Hall this International Women's Day
Wed 5 Mar Article
On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible women who have graced the Usher Hall stage—women whose voices have inspired, challenged and entertained. From legendary musicians to thought-provoking speakers, their impact resonates far beyond our walls.
It has been a privilege to welcome some of the most influential women in music to our stage. Joan Baez, a defining voice of protest and folk music, brought her powerful songs of justice and resistance. The legendary Ella Fitzgerald dazzled Edinburgh audiences with her groundbreaking jazz vocals and timeless stage presence. And in 1979, the visionary Kate Bush performed here as part of her Tour of Life, mesmerizing audiences with her theatrical, genre-defying style.
The legacy continues with an incredible lineup of women taking to our stage in the coming months. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus brings her heartfelt storytelling and indie-folk sound, while bestselling author and broadcaster Elizabeth Day will share her insights on success, failure, and resilience. Fans of rock and soul can celebrate the music of one of the greatest female performers of all time with A Tribute to Tina Turner, and world-renowned violinist Yeol Eum Son will showcase her breathtaking talent in a stunning classical performance with the SCO.
This International Women’s Day, we honor these artists—past and present—who have filled Usher Hall with their voices, their stories, and their strength. Their contributions inspire us, and we look forward to seeing many more remarkable women take the stage in the years to come.
