Smouldering, sultry, seductive: Buenos Aires is the city where passions catch fire and music teases the senses. Immerse yourself in its vibrant sensuality with the esteemed orchestra of Buenos Aires’s historic opera house, South America’s grandest – and the scorching emotions of Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla.

Piazzolla defined the new sound of Argentina with tango nuevo, driving an old-fashioned dance form into new worlds of passionate expression – in music for the heart, the mind and the body. Pablo Mainetti is one of the country’s iconic performers on the bandoneon – an authentically Argentinian accordion – and worked with the Astor Piazzolla Quintet: he brings brilliant authenticity to the heartbreaking melodies and pulsing rhythms of Piazzolla’s Bandoneon Concerto. Piazzolla’s smoky Libertango was one of the pieces that first established his superheated style – and even inspired pop chanteuse Grace Jones’s ‘I’ve Seen That Face Before’.

Alongside Piazzolla’s sizzling tango creations, the Orchestra and Buenos Aires-born conductor Mariano Chiacchiarini continue the concert’s drama but transport you from downtown Buenos Aires into the vibrant worlds of opera and ballet. The dazzling spectacle of music from Bizet’s Spanish tragedy Carmen will be performed. Tchaikovsky’s tragic Swan Lake which is rightly one of ballet’s most celebrated musical scores, featuring some of the most heartrending music ever written, will also be played. There will also be music from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde conjuring a love deeply profound and the concert also includes another Argentinian composer, Ginastera - his Estancia Suite.
